Why we shouldn't really be surprised with Kelly Shoppach's performance

Kelly Shoppach became just the second catcher in MLB playoff history to hit 2HRs and 5RBIs in one playoff game (Johnny Bench was the other one). In game two, he walked with bases loaded, driving in a run. What is perhaps more amazing is that he was lifted for a pinch hitter later in that game. When you look at statistics, none of this should surprise you. Despite having a very unflattering .176 BA and .268 OBP, Shoppach had a .344 OBP, 2.71 PAPP, and a homer every 15 at bats against lefties. Against righties, he had a .115 BA and .192 OBP and a .32 PPG. He is simply a platoon catcher, I have no idea why he ever plays against righties, but he can hit lefties decently well (and both C.J. Wilson and Derek Holland, the game 1 and 2 starters, are lefties). While probably not the most likely thing to happen in the series, his success in the first two games shouldn't really surprise anyone. Just don't expect him to have any success in game 3 against Lewis, a right hander.
